ZybaCafe - sofware written with Lazarus

ZybaCafe (formerly DireqCafe) is a next-generation free and open-source internet cafe management suite.ZybaCafe comprises a server-side administration suite, as well as clients to manage time-control on machines. The standard version uses postgresql as an RDBMS but porting it to other database systems should not be very difficult.[ED:It Might be easily ported to firebird]

upgrading firebird 1.5 to 2.0 latest stable

Yeah, last week I try to install the new Firebird 2.0. And it's easy to migrate the old ODS 10.1 (FB 1.5) to ODS 11 (FB2.0) what you need to do is:

spreading the word about latest firebird 2 (gold)

The Firebird Project today officially releases the much-anticipated
version 2.0 of its open source Firebird relational database software
during the opening session of the fourth international Firebird
Conference in Prague, Czech Republic.

Firebird 2.0 is the happy culmination of more than two years' efforts
from a broad-ranging, truly international community of dedicated
developers and supporters. It brings with it a large collection of
long-awaited enhancements that significantly improve performance,
security and support for international languages and realise some
desirable new SQL language features. Under the surface, it also
provides a much more robust code platform from which the
re-architecting planned for Firebird 3.0 is proceeding.

We are pleased to announce the availability of the phpBB3 Beta3 package. With this third beta release we are again a great step forward. With this beta no update path is provided due to a number of extensive database schema changes and us having decided to implement full UTF-8 capability. But what we did is implementing the first steps to provide you with an automatic update tool which should lay the ground for providing updates later.

kernel koroner - io scheduler

Interesting read (see the article bellow), I will check if linux io scheduler has some effect on firebird databases too , I saw some redhat benchmarks with oracle and seems that io schedulers do have some performance gain (that is scheduler's sole raison d'être after all )
some related papers
http://www.google.com/search?q=linux+2.6+i%2Fo+schedule
I'm really interested into this because we have one raid-5 setup and when one of the drives failed and added an new drive to the raid (soft array) the io speed was very poor (1M/s reconstruction speed) and killed the server (booted ant took 1 hour until the login prompt), also we had an mysql 5.1 instance with gigs of data that crashed the centos box when updating/reconstructing some table (4G of ram , athlonX2 and raid5 setup ) I couldn't even press ctrl-alt-del or even sysrq keys (no console error or kernel panik) I call it blank sceen of death (no video output) it might be related to ACPI or freq scaling but now we replaced with another box (same specs) and cpu scalling is disabled in bios

configuring firebird on large databases (linux kernel)

I took some tips from the oracle instalation notes [scroll down to Configuring Kernel Parameters]

Oracle instances consume memory and CPU resources on servers, and Ubuntu doesn't come configured to allow the quantity of resources to be consumed that we'll end up needing. To fix that, we therefore have to specify a set of new Kernerl Parameters which the operating system should use. That's easily done by editing one file, like so:

Firebir, Firefox mention in nepal - is time for iceweasel

The next major change came with the release of Firebird browser. Mozilla changed the name of the browser from Phoenix to Firebird. This was done to avoid trademark issues with a company called Phoenix Technologies, which makes a browser of its own. After months of brainstorming, the Mozilla team rested on a new name, Firebird. However, the name Firebird had to be changed again later because Firebird was the name of an open source development project that makes a relational database.

firebird on other architectures (powerpc/arm/ultrasparc/s390)

I read the mips porting thread and here is the one thing to care when doing the port (besides code patches)

Alex Peshkov wrote:
As I see from your answer about cross-compilation, security.fdb in your
package is created by INTEL, not MIPS, binary. And, therefore, it can't
be opened on MIPS, which, I suppose, may have different endianness,
different alignment rules, etc. Therefore you must create security
database at MIPS box to have it usable. But to do it you must attach to
the server, and to attach you need security.fdb => dead lock.

Let's start from the simplest opportunity - do you have isql_static for
MIPS (it's created during normal BOOT_BUILD) ?

10.MySQL / PostgrSQL / Firebird threatens MS SQL Server. SQL Server is the one division that showed a modest profit in 2004, but many database professionals are switching Open Source alternatives. Even though sales for SQL Server is growing, it is growing at a slower rate than the overall market.

[Please don't apologize! We're all volunteers, we're doing our best andwe have limited spare time. You should read some of my announcementson this list, stating that this-or-that will be ready in one day / oneweek / a couple of weeks... and compare to the actual delivery dates. In december 2002 (or 2003?) I estimated that we could have a full setof Firebird documentation ready in two years, everything written fromscratch, no copying from IBPhoenix or other docs. Of course I wouldn'thave to do it alone - there were as many as TWO active members in themanual subpoject then :-) :-)]

quote of the day "Its not as simple or straight forward as PostgreSQL or MySQL (or even Firebird) but its not much of a chore either. The one thing that I can't figure out is the 'sql' or 'isql' interfaces. I can't find explanations beyond how to invoke them in the guide and nothing I do has an effect.... falcon will rock on fulltext searches (mysql)

The good news is that the recently announced falcon storage engine should have a FULLTEXT engine that rocks. After explaining the situation a bit more, we decided that in the mean time a 64-bit MySQL with a ton of RAM is probably the only viable solution.

Gentle.NET ORM with firebird support

I have seen lots of .NET architect speak highly about NHibernate which I agree that is a great framework but I think that as it was ported from java they did not take the .NET advantages in consideration. I have tried for a while to use gentle.net framework which I found to be more of what I expected from a .NET framework as it uses attributes as it's mapping mechanism and by that you get in my opinion a better experience as a programmer.

chess game in ajax - done by morfik team

Much had been said about the browser as a platform. It was an idea strongly promoted by, the now gone, Netscape at the start of the Web revolution, but we never got there. Did we? Yes, we did! We just did not notice it!
If you take your browsers to this chess game, you might start to understand what I mean.

< This game has a great interface and is played against you by your own computer. Your moves do not get sent off to a server which comes up with a response and sends a move order back to your browser. The analisys of the play and the decision of the move is entierly done in Javascript, in your own machine, by the browser.

MyPostBirdSQL 2.0 RC1 released

Today a RC1 release is announced that many oss developers had been awaiting
MyFireGreSql 2.0 is based on code from mysql 6.0 ,firebird 3.0,postgresql 9.0
We needed a big shake up in open source database world and working on the common code base have it's
advantages:Firebird and Postresql borrowed from mysql's speed , mysql used MVCC for it's transactional engine (is based on firebird) .
SQL2003 is implemented in all three engines now that is published as standard .So why working on a three SQL200X implementations when we could work only on one? , The project's model is linux kernel where vendors are using only one source code for their distributions (patched properly) but there is only one organization for working on the kernel osdl.

Then they laugh at you

ot only does open source Firebird-Fyracle have a catchy name and almost match Oracle on the 6 well known “gold standard key database evaluation mapping criteria”, but it is “just as idiosyncratic”, AND you can run “Compiere v2.5.3c” ( almost )!

Here is the response from shocked oracle users after they found Firebird/Fyracle (Denial Mode)

New acronyms FLAPS , FWAP, FWIP

FLAPS is FLAP with ssl (that is s for)

FWAP is an acronym for the combination Microsoft Windows, Apache, Firebird and one or more of Perl, PHP and Python. It is modelled after the more well-known FLAP, referring to the all-open source/free software approach which uses Linux instead of Windows.
FWIP is the WIMP equivalent (alias) with firebird used instead of mysql
